This is what Michael had to say about his trip:
I spent last week in Saskatchewan hunting with 3 friends. We had
another successful trip with no travel problems. Hunted for 5 days and
managed about 250 birds. The weather did not cooperate. We had little
wind most of the week with temps going from the low 40’s in the morning
to mid 70’s in the afternoon. The moon was full and brought new birds
with it, but they appeared most active at dusk and to be night feeding
in the fields. Scouting is just as important in Canada as at home. We
spent a bunch on gas. I paid as much as
146.8 per liter (that about $5.50 US per gallon).
It was much drier this year versus the last 2-3 years. Water was
generally poor in most small sloughs but isolated areas had plenty of
water. The locals commented on the lack of snow cover last winter and
poor run-off. August was very wet and recharged some of the smaller
ponds.
The mallards were difficult to work in the fields. Perhaps they had a
bad production year?? We noted numerous young pintails and juvi white
geese. Other ducks appeared about normal for the area and time of year.
We shot a bunch more white geese than usual and fewer ducks. We hunted
the fields 3 days and water 2 days. We had a group of about 500 birds come in try to light on us and we watched in awe w/o anyone firing a shot. I had to shoot left
handed a couple times from the layout blind on snows that came in
behind us and managed a double once. No bands this year.
